ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif will likely inaugurate two Thar-coal power projects in two weeks.

With the Ministry of Energy (Power Division) as the coordinating ministry and Private Power & Infrastructure Board (PPIB) as supervising agency, two Thar coal-based power projects, 330 MW Thal-Nova Power at Block-IL and 1,320 MW at Block-1, achieved Commercial Operation Date (COD). Both projects started their commercial operations in February 2023. With the addition of these power plants, the Thar coal-based power generation plants’ total power production has reached 2,640 MW.

Thar Coal mines are listed among the largest coal fields in the world. The mining development work started as part of the China-Pakistan-Economic-Corridor (CPEC) and energy corridor. The electricity generated from the power plants will be utilized for the second phase of the CPEC.

It is worth mentioning the government of Pakistan is also actively working on developing the Thar coal projects to generate power so that dependence on imported fuel for power generation could be reduced. In this regard, a 660 MW plant at Port Qasim is designed to operate on Thar coal. Once fully functional, the project will save PKR 550 billion/annum in terms of coal and imported fuel.
