The Budget Allotted for 6 New and 18 Ongoing Karachi Mega Projects

Budget 2022-23 of Karachi state that Chief Minister of Sindh has allotted 118 billion for Karachi projects. At the same time, new infrastructure development schemes are allocated a sum of 3.1 bn for Karachi.

The budget document states that the total amount allocated for 18 ongoing and six new mega projects for Karachi stands at 15.37 billion. The budget allocated for the upcoming fiscal year is around double than last fiscal budget dedicated to mega schemes in Karachi.

Chief Minister Sindh said that the government is given top priority to urban development, especially in Karachi. He stated that development in six major sectors is underway, including solid waste management, storm water drains, water supply, sewerage treatment, internal roads, and mass transit.

The details of the allocated budget are as follows;

1 billion is allocated for new mega projects that include repairing and rehabilitating storm water drain in Karachi. The second major allocated budget is around 600 million for constructing the sports complex at Bakhtiari Youth Centre in the central district. 500 million is allocated for the rehabilitation of Nehar-i-Khayam, 450 million for the carriageway road from Nasir Brohi Hotel road to Mubarak Village, and 300 million for the construction and repair of roads and streets in Sachal Goth in the East district.

Lastly, 250 million is allocated for the repair and rehabilitation of the existing drain and sewerage system in the locality of Manzoor Colony in district East.

The amount of 1.7 billion has been allocated for constructing the flyover and underpass at Johar Chowrangi. The work on various roads in the SITE area is also underway, for which the government has allocated 1.3 billion.

Other few ongoing mega schemes and projects are the construction of U-Turn at Natha Khan Bridge, construction of Allama Iqbal park in Federal B Area, Karachi Sustainable Bus Rapid Transit Project (BRT Red Line), World Bank-funded Karachi Urban Mobility Project (Yellow BRT Corridor), Competitive and Livable City of Karachi Project (CLICK), Karachi Water & Sewerage Service Improvement Project (KWSSIP), etc.

9.42 billion has been allocated for the resettlement of affectees of Mehmoodabad, Orangi, and Gujjar Nullah and is also included in the fiscal budget 2022-23.
