World Bank Plans to Provide funds for Sindh Barrages Project-Realtorspk

Islamabad: The World Bank (WB) is considering providing further financial support, totaling approximately USD 72 million, to address funding gaps within the framework of the “Sindh Barrages Improvement Project”.

As outlined in official documents, the WB’s Board of Executive Directors will discuss the ‘Second Additional Financing (AF) for the Sindh Barrages Improvement Project’ next month. The main aim of this additional financing is to improve the reliability and safety standards of the Guddu barrage, while also strengthening the operational and managerial capabilities of the Sindh Irrigation Department in overseeing the barrage’s operations.

Originally valued at USD 326.6 million, the “Sindh Barrages Improvement Project” currently faces a financing shortfall of around USD 72 million. To meet contractual obligations in the near future, the project will require either funding from the government of Sindh or additional support from the International Development Association (IDA). The WB’s records indicate that due to accumulated delays, the completion of works at Guddu and Sukkur barrages will extend beyond the current project closing date of June 30, 2024.
