Chinese Firm Awarded Construction Contract of Gilgit-Shandur Road

Islamabad: The contract for the construction of Gilgit-Shandur road has been awarded to the Chinese Ningxia Communication Construction Co. LTD. The Gilgit-Shandur Road will be an alternative to the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC). JV bid the least cost of PKR 10.24 billion for the construction of the venture’s 70-kilometer stretch.

As per sources, the said foundation is part of a 216-kilometer-long road network known as the Gilgit-Shandur-Chitral Road, which has been proposed as an elective route for the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC). According to the evaluation report five companies were qualified for the bidding while three companies were disqualified. The drive was approved by the Executive Committee of the National Economic Council (ECNEC) in June of last year and will be supported by the central government through the Public Sector Development Program (PSDP).

NHA published the evaluation report for the Gilgit-Shandur Road 216 km. The Gilgit-Chitral Road will be open all year, especially during the winter, when heavy snowfall obstructs motor movement on the present Silk Route. The road runs through some of the country’s most remote and impoverished areas and is intended to usher in a new era of development in Chitral and Gilgit-Baltistan.
