Senate Urges Joint Survey for SEZs Near Islamabad

Islamabad: The Senate Standing Committee on Cabinet Secretariat, headed by Senator Saadia Abbasi, has issued a directive to the Secretary of the Board of Investment (BOI) and the Punjab government to jointly conduct a comprehensive survey for the establishment of Special Economic Zones (SEZs).

The primary purpose of the survey is to determine an area with the lowest population density and minimal adverse effects on the environment and local agriculture. During a recent committee meeting, a public petition was raised concerning the proposed establishment of an SEZ near the Hakla Interchange. This initiative, announced by the BOI, is under review.

The Secretary of the BOI has explained that SEZs are usually set up within provinces and are under the federal government’s jurisdiction. The government has proposed creating a Model Zone close to Islamabad as a reference point for other SEZs.

The Deputy Commissioner of Attock notified the committee that the local administration is currently evaluating three potential sites. However, a final decision is yet to be reached. For the latest Real Estate News and Blogs, visit Realtorspk blogs.
