Islamabad: Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has been engaged in extensive discussions with his party regarding the formation of the federal cabinet, expected to be announced shortly. These consultations were part of a comprehensive meeting held on Sunday, extending into the evening, aimed at finalizing the composition of the new cabinet. The oath-taking of the cabinet members could occur as early as Monday or Tuesday, with their first official meeting slated for the same day.

Despite the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N)’s attempts to solidify its cabinet, the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) has opted out of participating in the federal cabinet. The allocation of ministries to the Muttahida Qaumi Movement-Pakistan (MQM-P) remains undecided. Meanwhile, notable figures such as Istehkam-i-Pakistan Party President Aleem Khan and PML-Q leader Chaudhry Salik are expected to join the cabinet in its initial phase, amidst widespread speculation regarding the distribution of key portfolios.

According to sources, Khawaja Asif is set to maintain his position as the Defence Minister, with Musaddiq Malik taking over the Petroleum Ministry, Ahsan Iqbal continuing in Planning and Development, and Azam Nazeer Tarar resuming his role as the Law Minister. Potential appointments include Atta Tarar for Information Minister and Shaza Fatima Khwaja for Minister of IT. The leadership of the finance sector remains uncertain, with both Ishaq Dar and HBL’s Muhammad Aurangzeb being considered following discussions on the economic front. Mohsin Naqvi, former caretaker Chief Minister of Punjab and current PCB chairman, is also a contender for the role of Interior Minister, indicating his interest in participating in the upcoming Senate elections.
